Summer 2013 Basketball & Sports Camps

Are you looking for fun this Summer?

We are happy to report our collective email accounts are blowing up with requests for where to find some extra play time this Summer.  That is a good thing.

We’ve updated the site with a tab called Summer 2013.  Inside you will find a few of the camps, programs and facilities we have heard about over the past few weeks.  We will continue to update the site and hope it is helpful to you.

One flyer that just came our way was for a program called Nite School.  Thought we should pass that along in the attachment.
As for CTK, we will be back in touch next month with an announcement or two pertaining to the 2013-2014 season.

See you on the court!

And the Winners are …

The kids and families of Christ the King CYO!

While the season has come to an end, we wanted to thank each and every one of you for making the year so successful for the kids.  We have received more than 50 emails (which is nice) looking for a recap of the season. Let’s see if we can sum it up in a brief blog post, below:

Crab Feed: Without question this was our largest event in the last few years. with nearly 450 attendees (many of you new to our program). A special thanks to Vince Cirelli, the coaches and the many volunteers who made this such a successful event. All proceeds are re-invested right back into the program and facility for next year.

How did the teams do? Well, we don’t invest any time counting wins and losses. But we can report that while most of the parishes in the East Bay reported a drop in their participation, our program grew by 20 percent year over year.  We also know that 100 percent of our kids played their hearts out while showing great sportsmanship throughout the season.

Having said that, the good folks who run the West Diablo League and Diocese use Sportability to organize end-of year-tournaments. What we can tell you is this: more than 75 percent of our American boys team qualified for the West Diablo tournament, with two continuing to the Oakland Diocese Tournament.  Additionally, we couldn’t be any more proud of our girls program, which also grew this year.  The hard work from the players, many of them new to the sport, and our coaches was seen on the court each and every weekend, helping to send  60 percent of our teams to post-season tournaments.

Finally, a special shout out to the the 7th grade girls team who won the Oakland Diocese Tournament.  For those counting, that is back-to-back championships (way to go Lady Crusaders!).

Did you send me an evaluation?:  Yes we did.  But here it is again: http://bit.ly/Zt1we7 .  Just hit boys/girls and then the evaluation tab on the left (should only take a few minutes). A special thank you to all of our coaches who deserve a huge round of applauds for investing their time with our young children.

What’s Next?  Plenty.  Next year you can look forward to a pre-season camp, our 3v3 basketball tournament (fourth – eighth grade), our CTK pre-season national team challenge, and our annual Turkey Shoot Out over Thanksgiving, and the Spirit of Christmas Classic.

Final Thank You!:  This program is built on the countless hours our coaches and volunteers invest in our kids.  Their positive influence is the biggest reason kids return to the program (many of whom took a year off returned to the CYO community, while others who focused on one sport, now play a little hoops too).  From the coaches, to the 7th & 8th grade scorekeepers, to the parents who help get the kids to practice on time, thank you.

So that is it. Best of luck to all of our eighth graders heading off to bigger courts (and fields) in high school.  For the rest of you, we will look forward to seeing you back on the court soon!

Best wishes,

Christ the King CYO Basketball

Tournaments Raise Hoops, Hopes and Food during the Holiday Break

The Holidays represent a special time for family and friends within the Christ the King Parish.  And for the Girls and Boys 7th and 8th grade CYO basketball program, it offers a chance to not only spend time on the basketball court, but also lead the parish in the CYO program’s annual food drive to support the St. Vincent de Paul Society.

During the Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday breaks, Christ the King hosted more than 35 teams featuring more than 350 players from outside the parish.  In addition to offering the best CYO basketball in the East Bay, we asked every guest to bring a can of food to support the needy.  The proceeds from both Christ the King tournaments was more than 1,400 pounds of food, all of which was donated directly to St Vincent de Paul.

Christ the King is thrilled to host great basketball every year during the holiday season.  We are humbled and proud to be part of a larger catholic community that helps support the less fortunate.  A special thank you to Steve Murphy, our tournaments chairperson, and his committee of coaches and volunteers for making both events such a great and rewarding success for everyone.

May your 2013 be filled with happiness and success!

Sincerely,

Christ the King CYO Basketball

Thanksgiving Classic Supports St. Vincent de Paul Society

Happy Holidays everyone.

After a competitive weekend of basketball, our girls 7th American and 8th National teams led the way in supporting the St. Vincent de Paul Society this Holiday Season.

The weekend-long basketball tournament enabled Christ the King CYO to donate more than 400 pounds of food, and proceeds from the gate, to support the charity.  A special thanks to our Tournament Chair, Steve Murphy, Commissioner, Thom Martin, coaches Burton Coloma, Rob Bruder, Mike Kym, Ray Ramirez and all the families from the teams that donated their time to make the program such a success.

Now, on to the “Spirit of Christmas Tournament, ” featuring our boys 8th grade teams and the 7th grade American crew.  More details to come.

Are You Ready for Tip-Off Weekend?

Hi Everyone.

I know all of our talented teams are ready for tip-off weekend.  I’m just as confident that all of our coaches and volunteers are excited to get them playing.  Before we begin, here are just a few important updates for you:

About the Gyms:  If you are looking for directions to any of the gym locations, you’ll find a page specific to locations/directions on our website:  ctkcyohoops.org.  Hope it helps.  And when you are at our home gym, please remind those around you that we share the facility with the rest of the Parish.  Anything and everything we can do to keep it clean is appreciated.

About the Kids:  Exactly.  This program is about the kids.   Encourage everyone to respect one another, play hard and show good sportsmanship before, during and after the game.  The kudos you give all players in the gym will go a long way in making the overall CYO basketball experience enjoyable for everyone.

About Practice and Games:  Please remember when dropping off your child at practice (or games) to make sure you “hand-off” your player to your coach.  We don’t want any children unsupervised by parents or coaches at any of the locations.

About Crab Feed:  One of our largest CYO events is the Christ The King Crab Feed.  The date is secured, January 26, 2013.  We will send a specific note about that event, ticket sales, volunteer opportunities, etc., soon.  Please mark it on your calendar as it does sell out within a day or two.

That’s it for now.  Check the site for updates and as always, feel free to ask your coach, commissioner or me if you need anything.

All the best,

Christ the King CYO

Thank You!

Thank you to the more than 100 players and their families that made the first-ever Christ the King CYO basketball 3-on-3 tournament a success.  Special thanks goes to Thom Martin, Sean Mockler, Doug Senz, James Baird, Denise McCurry, the student supervisors from College Park, (you to Ray Ramirez) and the countless others who take good ideas and make them great events.   We look forward to building a great tournament next year.
Also, a shout out to the teams and families who visited our Parish.  Thanks for the positive feedback and sportsmanship.  Happy to have you and see you next time!

Good weekend.
